Welcome to Week 28 of Your Healing Journey!
This week, we’re diving into one of my favorite new ways to help people recover from trauma: EMDR Intensives. I’m Monica, a trauma therapist based in New York City. My practice focuses on using cutting-edge, evidence-based treatments to help people heal from trauma and get on with living the lives they’re meant to have. This blog is a space to share insights, tools, and support to aid in your recovery process.
What Are EMDR Intensives?
Definition
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Intensives are extended therapy sessions designed to process traumatic memories in a concentrated period. Instead of weekly sessions, intensives can last several hours a day over a few days.
Research Evidence
Numerous studies have shown that EMDR is highly effective in treating PTSD and other trauma-related conditions. Research indicates that EMDR intensives can be as effective as traditional weekly therapy sessions. According to a study published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, participants who underwent EMDR intensives reported significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, comparable to those receiving standard EMDR therapy over a longer period.

The Advantages of EMDR Intensives
Faster Recovery
One of the most compelling benefits of EMDR intensives is the speed of recovery. By condensing the therapy into a shorter period, you can experience significant progress in a matter of days rather than months. This accelerated process can be incredibly motivating and encouraging for individuals eager to move past their trauma.
Deep and Comprehensive Processing
EMDR intensives allow for deep and comprehensive processing of traumatic memories. Unlike weekly sessions, where we may have to pause during a challenging moment and pick up the next week, intensives provide the time and space to work through these difficult parts continuously. This continuous processing helps you move through the hard moments and reach the other side, where healing and self-compassion reside.
Efficiency
Intensives are also more time-efficient. While the total number of therapy hours might be similar, there’s less time spent on settling in and wrapping up each session. This efficiency means more of your therapy time is spent on actual processing, potentially leading to quicker results.
Self-Care and Coping Strategies
While EMDR intensives are intense, they are manageable with the right self-care and coping strategies. Throughout our previous weeks, we’ve discussed various self-care techniques that can support you during this process. These strategies are integral to managing the intensity of the sessions and ensuring you stay grounded and supported.
Practical Exercise: Preparing for an EMDR Intensive
1. Research and Reflect:
- Spend some time researching EMDR intensives. Reflect on whether this approach feels right for you. Consider your schedule, support system, and readiness for intensive therapy.
2. Self-Care Plan:
- Develop a robust self-care plan to support you before, during, and after the intensive sessions. Include activities that help you relax, stay grounded, and process your emotions.
3. Consult a Therapist:
- If you’re considering an EMDR intensive, consult with a licensed therapist who offers this service. Discuss your goals, concerns, and what you hope to achieve through the intensive.
